The song “Mad World” by Gary Jules, orginally written by Tears for Fears, was the theme song for the movie, “Donnie Darko”. The film came out in 2001 and was an instant cult classic in Australia, but gained popularity slower in the US. I was pleasantly disturbed by it, while down under. The actual story line was a little hard to follow, but the music was powerful. It made me think about all the pain and suffering in the world.
“All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Goin’ nowhere, goin’ nowhere
Their tears are fillin’ up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow”
Seeing Gary Jules and Donavon Frankenreiter play live, shortly after seeing the movie, was amazing.
Jules’ rendition of “Mad World” was bone chilling. It’s sad that so many people feel this way and find little hope in tomorrow.
Sometimes things have to get worse, to get better.
